Well, I received the polarized film that Chris Vos sent me earlier this week and finally got around to replacing the old film in my Donkey Kong Game and Watch with it. So how did it go?

Well........ it was a success! Disassembling the Game and Watch went very smoothly thanks to the link that Chris Vos posted on how to do it. After putting in the new film and reassembling the Game and Watch, I was happy to see the sprites restored to their original deep black form. I would like to once again thank Chris Vos for sending me the film and cutting it to size. Hopefully more Game and Watch's will be restored in the future thanks to this topic.

Hello Chris, I've got the same problem with my DK2 and a piece of polarizer would surely be appreciated. So if you got some left I would be happy to pay the postage to the Netherlands. I've also sent you a PM.

Regards,

Dave.

Hi All,
Sorry for any slow replies. I'm quite busy at the moment.
I've got enough film left for 4 dual screen G&W's. Because I don't visit the forum very often and therefore am quite slow to reply to PM's, I figured the easiest way would be to put them up on eBay.
So if anybody is still interested you can buy your replacement polarizers for your faded screens though this eBay page: www.ebay.com/itm/290869959250 Please also use this if you have already sent me a PM but I haven't replied to you yet.

I also finally got around to making a few pictures of the original and fixed screen:

With the flash of my camera the original screen doesn't even look that bad, but under normal lighting conditions it was quite unplayable.

Regards,
Chris

Yeah, they sold a lot faster than I had thought.
I've actually just bought another G&W with one faded screen that I wan't to fix this way, and I've had other people asking for more polarizers as well. So I decided to order some more polarized film to be able to make more. I'll probably have another batch ready in a week or so. I'm thinking of machine cutting the new ones to the exact shape of the original ones from Nintendo if I can manage it.
I'll post here when the new ones are available.

Regards,
Chris

Hi all,

I've got a new batch up on eBay.
I've machine cut them to the exact shape and size of the original polarizers. They're a bit more expensive than the last lot because of the costs for machine cutting them.

Regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I've just ordered these from you on eBay, however I wonder if I could trouble you for some info please?

I took apart my unit to get a feel for it using the instructions on a link in this thread: damntechnology.blogspot.com/2010/09/how-...lean-game-watch.html

However I'm a little unsure how the ribbon - cable with black and white stripes - goes back, does it need to fit under something? Also the filter I've bought from you does it fit on the very front, e.g: when unit is assembled is this the "screen" you can touch?

Thank you in advance.

Using the info where the Donkey Kong unit is taken apart, it gave me the impression that the ribbon cable for the bottom screen was stuck in place somewhere, whereas in actual fact it just seems to rest against the screen when it's all put back together, which really surprised me.

I had no idea that what essentially appears to be a 'bit of plastic' or what I thought was the actual screen of the device would be the reason why my screen is faded, and that it can be fixed, this is great news and thanks for arranging the supply of these Chris.

Regards,

Steve

You are correct about the way the ribbon cable is attached. In most LCD games I've seen, the cable is held in place by being pressed against the screen between the two halves of the housing when the unit is put together. Sometimes some form of glue is applied, but most of the time a rubber strip is used to apply pressure. It appears a bit flimsy, but seems to function quite well.
The polariser in front is indeed the bit of screen you can touch. There is also a second polariser, combined with a reflector at the back of the screen. Because this one is less exposed than the one at the front is is far less likely to be damaged or faded by light.
I hope the new set op polarizers fixes your unit to your satisfaction!

Kind regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Yes I noticed this second one. If it is the one I'm thinking of then it's more of a gray/silver colour isn't it, and quite shiny on one side, or is this the reflector you mentioned?

Are these replaceable too do you know, as these unlike the ones at the front, don't appear to be see through, and their role seems to be that of a background for both screens?

Really looking forward to getting the filters, if they work as well as shown in the images - and I'm sure it will then my until will be as good as new again.

Regards,

Steve

Hi Chris,

Filters arrived with me at work today, so will be trying them out later this evening. Thank you for the note about removing protective film, will make sure I do this.

I also believe there is a right and wrong way for the filter to face, if so is that a trial and error thing - after all it can only go one way or the other lol - or is there a method to it?

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Good to hear that the new polarizers fixed your G&W!
Before and after photo's would be much appreciated. Allways good to see the result :).

There is indeed a right and wrong way to put the polarizers in. (The one rounded corner should be in the same position as that of the original filter. From the top of my head this is top left when the screen is viewed from the front.) But clearly you allready figured that out ;)

Kind regards,
Chris

Hello, I'm a long time G&W fan from Brazil.

I've got three units with lcd problems, my Snoopy Tennis unit is in otherwise perfect shape, but I can hardly see the screen elements unless I look at it using a certain viewing angle, which makes it very hard to play. Could it be the same problem? Also, I have a DKII and Safebuster with faded screens.

Besides that, I have a couple of units with the reflective silver backing permanently stained from what it looks like moisture. Anyone has found any reflective sheets like that for sale online?

Regards,

Rod
