Hi Rafael,

I've had someone else ask me how to open up the right side of the Mario Bros G&W. Since I don't have one of these to test with, could you explain how you managed to remove th emetallic plates to reach the screws and open it up without damaging anything?

Kind regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I did manage do open a right side of a booklet dualscreen and it was quiet easy to do.

Base yourself on below link and aspecially take a close look a the third picture.
You do not have to remove the metallic plates because that would damage the plates :-(

www.gameandwatch.ch/en/forum/45-g-w-acce...o-bros-lifeboat.html

On the top and the bottom of the white plastic you have 4 (2x2)clips that holds the back in place. Take a fine micro flat screwdriver and squize it in the edge between the white and the color just next to a clip. Do this the same next to a second clip and this should open the right side.

Tip: let grow your nails which is even more easy :-)

Let me know if you had succes or not.

Regards

Rafael

I did buy some of these polarizers and fixed two Donkey Kong 2 JR-55.

The LCD, actually the sprites, look like new now! Crisp sharp and deep black.

Thanks Chris, for sharing such important spare parts! :ok2:

Hi Gawaleus,

I'm happy to hear that you were able to fix your G&W's with my polarizers. Glad I could be any help!

I adjusted the links in my post above to the new batches of polarizers.

Do you do polarizers for the Wide Screen range? Need something for my copy of Super Mario Bros. (YM-105)?

Just ordering 2x multi screens from you.

Hi Eddy and Neil,

Thanks for buying my polarizers!

Eddy, to open up the consoles you will need a good small philips head (kruiskop) or regular scewdriver. (If I remember correctly all my own units all have philips head screws, but I think that some models have regular screws.) I personally use the bits from this Velleman set a lot: www.velleman.eu/products/view/?id=385518
To clean the unit you can use some warm water and mild soap (afwasmiddel) for the loose, non-electronic parts such as the buttons, and regular rubbing alcohol for the rest. (Schoonmaak-alcohol kan je bij een drogist als Kruidvat in een klein flesje kopen.) Regular cotton pads and Q-tips (wattenschijfjes en wattenstaafjes) help with easy cleaning.

Good luck!
Chris

Hi Chris,

You are welcome,
And thank you for the info, and your advice!
,and providing us with the nicely cut film.
I think I found a new hobby :GW2: :ok2:
I just orderd the velleman set you recommended,
looks like a handy set for all sorts of electronic devices indeed.

And I am also looking for a good (not too expensive) precision soldering set,
do you have anny tips on that? :-)

Thanks,
Cheers!

I'm not a very experienced solderer, but for the few times I need it I've bought a cheap/basic soldering station. Since the electronics shop in my neighborhood sells a lot of Velleman products it is also by them. I believe it is this one: www.velleman.eu/products/view/?id=385738 But I think any station with a fine tip will work. (For really detailed work I think you can buy even finer tips I think.)
Since I didn't have much experience with soldering I didn't want to start out on any 'real' electronics (such as my G&W's), because I was afraid I would botch it. I bought one of Velleman's mini-kits to practice on. They are a lot of fun to build: www.velleman.eu/products/list/?id=342509 I also found a lot of practical advice on www.instructables.com

Good luck with your new hobby! :)

Hi Chris,

Thanks again for your advice, :GW2:
That's exactly the soldering set I meant.
I'm going to order one this afternoon.

I have a technical education,so soldering should be no problem.
But a good idea to try your soldering skills on cheap electronics first.

I now have almost al the stuff to get started on my G&W's. :mario1:
I will let you know how it worked out,
once I cleaned and replaced the film on donkey kong2.

Cheers! :ok2:

Hi guys,

I would post a reply when I replaced the film on one of my G&W's.
Well I just finished replacing the top screen on my pinball G&W,
It was fairly easy to do with the explanation from the link Chris Vos provided.

The first picture is before replacing the polarization film(it's a bit fuzzy, but you can see the difference with the bottemscreen)
The second is after replacing.

It's great to see the nice black LCD images, like new again! :GW2:
:ok2:

Thanks again Chris for providing the needed film, and advice!!
On to the next one, donkey kong 2!

Cheers!,
Eddy

Hi again! :)

The pinball G&W topscreen replacement was a succes,
Today I have replaced both polarizing films on my donkey kong 2 G&W.

This one was in very poor condition, you could barely see the lcd images.

Anhang beforereplacingfilmdk2.jpg wurde nicht gefunden.

Both films turned kind of yellow,I think because of sunlight and smoke..

Anhang leftnewfilmrightoldfilm.jpg wurde nicht gefunden.

I haven't cleaned the unit yet, just wanted to see the result from the new film as quick as possible :) .
And the result is amazing! ,again both screens look like new!

Anhang dk2closeuptopafterreplacingfilm.jpg wurde nicht gefunden.

Anhang dk2closeupbottomafterreplacingfilm.jpg wurde nicht gefunden.

Again thanks Chris,
I will order some more film soon

I also cut one film to replace the screen on my gakken runaway lcd card game,it's not a G&W.
This one is also like new again...I didn't have a before pic. but you could not see the images at all.

Anhang gakkenrunawaylcdcardgameafterreplacement.jpg wurde nicht gefunden.

The next up is Greenhouse.

Till the next one,
Cheers!

Hi Ed75,

Thanks for all the great feedback and detailed images!
The polarizers in my own units had also turned completely orange over time. I think this is mostly due to the influence of light and not so much from smoke. It's nice to see that the edges of your old polarizer retained their original grey color where it was shielded from light by the edge of the unit's housing.
I don't own any Gakken games myself, but other people might be interested, and I'd be happy to offer polarizers cut to the right size for them if you can let me know the proper dimensions.

Kind regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,
and everybody reading,

No problem,
I don't know the dimensions for the gakken lcd game,
but the film for the multiscreens is just big enough.
I placed the old film on top of the new,and traced it with a small stanley knife, then cut it with some sharp fine siccors.
I only had to cut a few millimeter of two sides, the other two sides were about the same shape.
I'll post some more results soon! :GW2:

Cheers,
Eddy!

Hello guys,

If anyone could tell me what are the specs for the film I'd appretiate it. I can't order it on ebay becouse my country has tough restrictions over import.

My only option is trying to get the film here in my country, but for that I need the specs.

Thank you.

Hi idarwin

I don't have the specs, but another idea, why not taking the faded original one as a template? together with a waterproof pen, you could even then make it very simply by your onw :) just an idea

cheers, gameandwatch

Thank you, yes! But when I mean specs, I'm not talking about the size. I'm wondering about the opacity, and the polarization angles and so on. I bet there is more than meets the eye with this stuff :mario1:
