Hi guys!
I have some G&W with low graphics, and I'm trying to find new polarized film to replace the old one. Do anyone know where I can buy it? (i just search in some asian webs, but no one have the same size that G&W...)
Thanxs!

Hi Perdemora,
Are they all dual screen G&W's? If so I sell replacement polarizers on eBay.
If you need polarizers for other types of G&W's please let me know what kind. I can make them for wide screen models too. If you need other sizes, please let me know the specifications, and I'll see what I can do.
Kind regards,
Chris

Hi ChrisVos and everybody,
I really like your step by step how to disassemble a G&W!
>
I have a Mario bros :mario1: dual screen here where some parts of the graphics are totally missing so it became unplayable
.
Would replacing the polarizer help me with this problem or is this another part that is broken?
Anybody else who can help with this problem? I really want to resolve this if possible because this game is really near mint condition and completed with box.
Thank you for the feedback

Hi Rafael,
If parts of the screen are missing completely this is most likely caused by a faulty connection between the ribbon cable and the glass of the screen. You cannot repair this with a new polariser but you could try to improve the connection between cable and screen.
To see if the problem lies in the connection between the ribbon cable and the glass, disassemble the unit and gently clean the part where the cable connects to the glass with some rubbing alcohol and a cotton-swab (q-tip) or a soft cloth. After cleaning partly reassemble so that you can turn it on but make sure that you still have access to the glass of the screen. Try to apply some mild pressure on the part where the cable and glass connect. If this improves the quality of the faded sprites the problem lies with the connection. You can try to permanently solve this by inserting some rubber or foam in between the units body parts and the edge of the screen where the cable connects so more pressure is applied when the unit is assembled.
From the picture it also appears that the sprites at the top of the screen are darker than those at the bottom. This could be caused by the polariser having faded non-uniformly causing the sprites to stay dark at the top and become lighter towards the bottom of the screen. To see if this is the case, find a pair of polarised sunglasses (polaroids) and look at the screen through them. While turning the glass of the sunglasses, if there is an angle at which all sprites become nice and black, the problem is a faded polariser.
Good luck!
Chris

Hi Chris
Thank you for this detailed info.
I'll try this first with a G&W that I have for spares.
I'll let you know what comes out?
Tip: you should really open a G&W repaircenter
Going from your name, are you Dutch or from Belgium?
Thanks
Rafael

Hi Chris!
Thanks for yours advices. I also have tried because I had a similar problem. As you see in the pictures of oil panic, even putting a new polarizing filter (your polarizing filter hehe), there are some sprites that do not look good at all. I tried to clean the ribbon cable with a little alcohol and a cotton swab, but I've seen that cotton is stained in black (that's bad?). This has slightly improved lost graphics quality, but as you see in the picture, still remains the problem. I do not know if the cause might be a bit worn ribbon cable as shown in the photo.
It also occurs in a Panorama Screen, where some graphics have completely disappeared but the rest are perfect ... You know if I can solve the problem in the same way?
Also, I will need polarized filters for Multiscreens book style (Marios Bros, Life Boat and Rain Shower) Could get them?
Thanxs for all one more time.
Regards.
César

Hi!
Thanks for the great advices Chris. Will try them out with couple of my G&W. Im also having a problem with couple of my panorama screens where the parts of the pixels are blinking or fading especially when you turn the unit on. After a while the pixels are fine or they dont blink that much. I have noticed that if you tilt the unit vertically upwards it seems to fix the problem a bit. The pixels come clearer etc.. . Any ideas how you could repair or fix this kind of problem? or is it something the you cant do anything about. All advices would be appreciated. :-k

Hi Perdemora and Farwanderer,
Sorry for the slow reply, I've been quite busy with some other projects and haven't checked this site much lately.
Perdemora, the problem with those faded sprites is probably due to the power current not being able to reach those parts of the screen properly. If you take out the glass part of the screen and hold it up to the light, you can see that each seperate sprite has been etched (?) into it. The current from the batteries is transfered to those parts of the screen via the seperate veins in the ribbon cable. The four damaged connectors in the ribbon cable that are visible in your pucture could be the cause of this. (It's also possible that the glass of the screen is somehow damaged, but that is less likely.) I don't know a simple solution to that problem, but you might try to improve the connection between the glass and the damaged parts of the ribbon cable by placing four small pieces of a metalic foil (anything else that conducts current well) onto the ends of the damaged connectors, between the ribbon cable and the screen. I can't guarantee that this will fix i, but it might be worth a try.
Farwanderer, the blinking or missing sprites on your screen are probably also due to faulty connctions between the ribbon cable and the LCD screen. Have you opened up the unit and tried cleaning the connectors yet?
I can make polarizers for the Marios Bros, Life Boat and Rain Shower multi screen units, but I do not own any of those to take measurements from. Perdemora, could you send me the exact measurements of the filters in one of those units? Or better yet, can you send me a scan of the actual filters? That way I can make them in the exact shape of the originals. I will send you a PM with my e-mail address.
Kind regards,
Chris

Hi peopIe!
I opened the Multiscreen-book-style (Mario Bros, Life Boat and Rain Shower) to see what measures is the polarized filter, and results that are exactly the same as the others multiscreen (photo 1; In the picture they look a little different but it's the perspective)
I put one new polarized filmd and it's work perfectly, so if anyone has problems with Mario Bros, Life Boat or Rainshower, you must know that the polarized filters from Chris can be used to fix the weak graphics :ok2: .
The only problem I have, is that I don't know how to open the right side of these Multiscreen. The left side opens like any other removing screws. But what about the right? (photo 2) There are no screws to remove so I don't have any idea. I tried to throw a little the ribbon cable but I only got a disturbing noise like "roc roc" . Does anyone know how to open it without risk of breaking anything? [-o<
On the other hand, the problem I had with the Oil Panic (some lost graphics), I tried to replace the ribbon cable from another G&W that is fine, but nothing changed (which looked good was still looking good and the Oil Panic is still seen as bad) I tried to clean the glass of the Oil Panic with cotton and alcohol (especially at the bottom where it contacts), and even softened a bit, the problem remains the same.
For now, I give it as impossible :arge: .
In the next post I will try to look the Panorama Screens to see if we can solucionate the lost graphics :GW2:

I've got new links for the polarizers on eBay:
www.ebay.com/itm/290921996050
www.ebay.com/itm/290921996086
Perdemora, there might be a slight chance that the missing sprites are actually caused by faded spots in the polarizer on the back reflective film. You could try this out by flipping over one of the polarized films you bought from me and sliding it in underneath the glass, but above the reflector. If this fixes the missing sprites your back reflector is the cause. I am looking into making replacements for these, but as of yet I haven't found the right material yet.
Sadly I don't have any idea on how to open the right side of the book-style G&W. It might just be 'clicked' shut with a snap-connection, which would make it difficult to open without damaging it. Have you had any luck yet?
Kind regards,
Chris

Hi zigoriljo,
Unfortunately that does not work for the back polarizer. For that you need a polarizer combined with some kind of reflective backing. I'm still looking for a material that gives the right amount of reflectiveness without becoming to shiny like a mirror or becoming to dark to see clearly.
Kind regards,
Chris

Hi there,
I've read the link with the instructions how to open a multiscreen booklet to replace the filters.
The left side is absolutely no problem but it is the right side that is the difficult part. I see in the instructions that you have to remove the metallic plates to be able to access the screws?
How do you safely remove these metallic plates? You use some kind of heat for glue?
Thank you for the advice
Regards
Rafael

Hi Rafael,
Any luck yet removing the metallic plate that covers the screws for the right side?
In the regular multi-screen model the similar plates with the logo and texts for the controls are stuck on with glue like a very strong sticker. I don't know what you can use to remove it without damaging the plate itself. Forcing it off by prying a small screwdriver underneath will probably damage it, but you could carefully try to see if you can get the edge loose at least. You could also try a special solvent for sticker-glue, but be sure to try this out on a hidden piece of plastic first because this kind of solvent can dissolve some kinds of plastics!
Kind regards,
Chris
