Hi,

I'm new to the forum and am just embarking on a project to salvage and RC04 Fire game I have.

It was a spares or repairs purchase, and was not in a good way when I got it, but got me thinking about how these tick... There isn't much information around on these, but I'm getting up to speed on early 80's electronics and with a "nothing to lose" attitude am making some progress.

My idea is to have the original game mounted in a frame that has an LED emulated screen. For this game there are no good hi-res pictures of the startup screen (showing all LCD segments) that can be used to make the screen backing.

I would be interested if anyone else has ever attempted this and would be happy to document my journey on this site, but would love a decent picture that I can use as a template for an A4 sized model...

Hopefully this idea sparks other game and watch enthusiast imaginations, or you may have a unit that seems useless because the LCD has broken/ cracked / bled out

Thanks in advance

Sounds like an interesting idea!

Well things are progressing well and I've posted some information on the following instructable which taught me most of what I now know about LCD control signals (worth a read if you're interested in the "How" of Game and Watch!
www.instructables.com/id/Direct-Reading-...-General-Purpose-IO/

I ended up switching over to a broken Parachute game, as I have a working one of these, and I picked a broken one up from a Japanese eBayer for around £14

I'm about to create a protoboard of my breadboard (from the video), which will perform the conversion of the LCD signals to LED. Next steps will be to scroll saw an a4 sized piece of MDF board to cut out the characters, and I have a piece of opal opaque perspex to sit over the top, so as the LCD signals are converted, the shapes are lit by led, and shine through.

I'll keep this thread updated at the next steps, and as always, any suggestions/ideas that could help me would be appreciated...

I can't add the video here, but you can see a low res version on the "instructables" link above, or I can host somewhere if anyone wants.
